Lanterns has not been renewed for a second season, but DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran says the decision is coming. In an interview with Collider, he said news on Season 2 should arrive before the end of the year, though he didn’t name a date.
According to Safran, the call depends on the writers’ room. If the team can come up with “a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season,” that will decide whether Season 2 happens. In other words, the studio is waiting on a story, not on the show’s performance.
Season 1 has been a hit. The eight-episode run wrapped on Oct. 4, and Variety reported that episodes averaged over 12 million U.S. viewers ahead of the finale, and nearly 19 million once international viewing is included. Safran said the most rewarding part has been seeing Green Lantern back in the cultural conversation.
Without spoiling anything, the finale also sets up John Stewart’s path to DC Studios’ Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. We’ll share any renewal news here at Green Lantern Watch as soon as it’s announced.
